After getting some replies from other Arma 2 Linux hosts, it seems part of the problem was the Linux Virtual Server solution I was using on the trial. I've now moved the setup to a dedicated linux server and so far so good, server launches in a few seconds. Will have to see if it crashes out when we get some more players on it.
